Tips for temps

Working as a ‘Temp’ has its own unique set of challenges to overcome in order to be successful. Here are some great tips to help you survive your first temp role or to help you with the next one.

Arrive early to the assignment, every day.

Getting to work on time is a sign of a good employee and is critical to your success as a temp. Be organised and arrive 10-15 minutes early so you have plenty of time to settle in before the rush of the working day begins.

Become familiar with the working environment

You can achieve more if you ask questions and find out about the company you are temping for. Do some research about the company and observe the behaviours and attitudes of the employees. This will allow you to fit within the companies’ culture and feel comfortable during your time there.

Complete the tasks you are given and then ask for more

When working in a temporary assignment be proactive and complete all your assigned tasks to the best of your ability. Ask questions, be motivated, take notes and if you get stuck don’t be afraid to ask for help. Always keep busy and ask for additional tasks because this is what employers are looking for in potential hires.

Be professional, friendly and courteous

Often you may feel somewhat shy or awkward during your first day or week in a new assignment. Make the effort to smile, make eye contact and introduce yourself to people. Be helpful, ask questions and most of all be involved so you enjoy yourself whilst on assignment.
