Improve your interview skills

There are two major types of interviews, the screening interview and the selection interview. Screening interviews are used to quickly disqualify candidates who do not meet the minimal skills and experience required for the position. Candidates who satisfy the requirements are then asked to attend a selection interview, which is used to make a hiring decision.

Screening Interviews

There are three types of screening interviews: telephone, face-to-face and online. Telephone screening is the most popular method and your goal is to make a quick impression to ensure you are invited for further interviews or to continue to the next step. To do this be prepared to share examples of the skills necessary to perform the position and explain any discrepancies in your employment history.

  • Be honest and provide the facts
  • Build rapport but don’t push too hard since this is a brief interview
  • Provide clear and concise answers to questions
  • Be positive
  • Focus on the caller: avoid distractions and minimise background noise.
  • Have a pen and paper with you.

Selection Interview

The selection interview is the most important step in the job search process. It’s your chance to sell yourself to the company and show them why you are the best person for the job.

  • Prepare for your interview by researching the company, find out about their services, culture and leadership.
  • Read the job description carefully, this will help you understand what is expected within a particular position and what qualifications the employer is looking for.
  • Practice common interview questions and think of examples you could use to describe your experiences in dealing with different situations.
  • Sleep well the night before, dress appropriately for the interview and allow plenty of time to get to your interview.
  • Be confident and enthusiastic about your career and what you have achieved.
  • Plan to answer the question, "How do you fit within our organisation?"
  • Be prepared to ask questions, “What makes a person a success at this company?”, “What motivates you at the company?” or “How would you define or describe your management style?”
